Check valve: what it is for and how it works
Syst-MP, Ana Ribeiro

A check valve allows water to flow in one direction and closes automatically to prevent reverse flow. It is used in various pumping systems.

Check valve: water flows in one direction

How does a check valve work?

Opening and closing depend on the flow conditions and the valve mechanism. Different designs are available; the installation position must follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the flow direction marked on the body.

Where is it used?

Applications include water supply, irrigation and wastewater pumping. The model must suit the fluid and installation conditions. A valve intended for clean water may not be suitable for water containing solids.

Which signs deserve attention?

Water flowing backwards, noise or changes in operation warrant a technical check. These signs can have several causes and do not, on their own, prove that the valve is faulty.

Frequently asked questions

Does a check valve need manual control?

The non-return function is automatic: the valve allows flow in the intended direction and closes to prevent reverse flow.

Can it be installed in any position?

It depends on the model. Follow the flow direction and the installation positions permitted by the manufacturer.

Does a check valve solve every banging noise in pipes?

No. Water hammer and noise require an assessment of the system. Valve selection and closing behaviour are only part of that assessment.
